What Are The Latest Changes For Australian Student Visa?

Australia has been witnessing a noticeable decline in the number of foreign student enrollments in Australian colleges and Australian universities in the last couple of years.

this had sparked serious concerns with regard to tight Australian immigration rules for overseas students.

Taking a cue from the plunging foreign student numbers in Australia, Australian immigration department has taken a decision to relax the number of minimum requirements for foreigners from nearly 29 nations. This includes India among other nations.

New rules for Australian student visas will become effective from 24th March, 2012 onwards. And this will give a much needed fillip to foreign student enrollments in Australian educational institutes including Australian universities and Australian colleges.

Streamlined Visa Processing
What is streamlined visa processing?
DIAC assesses student visa applicants who lodge their applications on or after
24 March 2012, and who hold a Confirmation of Enrolment from a participating university in
Australia at Bachelor, Masters or Doctoral degree level, as though they were a lower migration
risk (similar to the current Assessment Level 1), regardless of their country of origin.

What are the benefits of streamlined visa processing?
Under the streamlined visa processing arrangements, student visa applicants will generally
have reduced evidentiary requirements. As such, universities can be confident that the majority
of their students will have their visa applications processed quickly. This will help to make
Australia a destination of choice for international students.

Which universities are participating in the streamlined visa processing
arrangements?
Of the 42 universities in Australia, 41 are currently participating in the streamlined visa
processing arrangements.  Individual universities must make a formal application to participate
in the streamlining arrangements. These applications are then assessed by a panel comprising
representatives from Commonwealth agencies and chaired by DIAC.  Approved universities are
then listed in a legislative instrument signed by the Minister for Immigration and Citizenship.
